Meet the Local Artist

Kouraku Kiln’s residency studio is home to local and international artist, designer and craftsman. When coming for a residency you will also get to interact with Japan based creators.

Sakurai Yooko 櫻井暢子

“When we draw, we take the approach of ‘translating’ ”

Aichi prefecture born multidisciplinary artist and poet, Sakurai san is based both in Oita and Burlin. Her series “色即是空,唯只在流'“ produced during her artist-in-residence was selected for the Japan Ceramic Association's 5th Contemporary Ceramics Encouragement Award Kyushu/Okinawa Exhibition.

Yugyong Jong

Fukuoka base multidisciplinary artist, Jong san was born in Kobe (Hyogo Prefecture) from Korean parents. This dual identity is a main part in his artistic discourse. In 2023 Jong participated in a 3 month residency program to create his "Omura-yaki" series.

Jong created the fictional historical ceramic ware "Omura-yaki". This body of work is based on the 1950 Omura Immigration Detention Center and porcelain hand-grenades and bombs that were made in Arita Town in the 1940s.

Ichinose Kei

Arita resident Ichinose is one of the kiln’s artist. On his spare time he creates his own designs at the studio. Most of his production is made on the potter’s wheel.
